My favorite hangout is Aux Trois Mailletz at 56 rue Galande in the 5th arr. There’s a piano player and singer on the ground floor, the atmosphere is pretty laid back, and the crowd is friendly mix of locals and tourists.
Polly Magoo on the rue St. Jacques just a few blocks from the Seine, is a classic ex-pat bar. its cleaned up and become a bit yuppified since the old days when it was a bit more bohemian.
There are a bunch of bars on the rue Oberkampf on the Right Bank that will remind you of Greenwich Village in New York.
The new trendy area is around the Place Bastille where the new Opera house has sparked a revialization of the neighborhood.
